What has been shown

Phase 1 established a self-maintaining, spatially bounded protocell built from an explicit conserved material mesh. Continued organization depends on local metabolism, material turnover, membrane maintenance, environmental resources, and causal repair rather than a privileged health variable or scripted controller.

Reproduction is physical

The mesh organism can grow from surplus material, undergo local mechanical fission without a divide command, partition its physical state, and establish multi-generation lineages. Multiple forms of heredity and phenotype transmission have been qualified.

The important failure

The project has not yet demonstrated environment-driven evolutionary adaptation. Selection experiments failed because ecology applied pressure too late, the tested hereditary trait had no selectable advantage, or the population completed zero generations. The active D-094 investigation has no authoritative final verdict yet.

Claim boundary

Digital Cell is a certified candidate autopoietic digital protocell, not yet an evolving, sensing, learning, behavior-generating organism.
